Park on level ground with the engine off and cool (or 5–10 minutes after running). Pull the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, then pull again. Oil should sit between the min and max marks. Fresh oil is amber to light brown and clear. Dark brown but still clear is okay. Black, thick, gritty or milky oil (coolant contamination — a head gasket warning) means trouble. Metal particles or a strong burnt smell are red flags. Low or very dirty oil suggests poor maintenance and should be factored heavily into any buying decision.

Look for coloured puddles (green, red or orange) under the car — especially near the radiator, hoses and water pump. Check the coolant overflow reservoir — if it's low, that's a warning. A brief valve tick on cold start is normal — a persistent deep knock is not. Deep knocking points to rod or bearing wear. Loud ticking from the top of the engine suggests lifters, injectors or an exhaust leak. Under acceleration, knocking or pinging means detonation, poor fuel or timing issues. A rough idle with misfire sounds points to coils, plugs, injectors or a vacuum leak. Rattling from the timing cover area — especially on cold start — often means a worn timing chain or tensioner, which is expensive to repair.

Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil — worn piston rings, valve seals or turbo seals. It is most visible on deceleration or after the car has been idling. White smoke (thick, sweet-smelling, slow to clear) means coolant is burning — head gasket, cracked head or cracked block. Black smoke means a rich fuel mixture — clogged air filter, bad injectors, faulty MAF sensor or turbo boost issues. Diesels can produce some black smoke under heavy load, but it should not be excessive or constant.

On a manual: the clutch should engage smoothly mid-pedal with no slipping (where the revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate), no grinding on shifts, no jumping out of gear and no judder on take-off. On an automatic: look for delayed engagement from Park or Neutral into Drive or Reverse, harsh shifts or clunks, RPM flaring between gears, or slipping under acceleration. Test the manual shift mode if fitted. A transmission repair or replacement is one of the most expensive jobs on any car — thorough testing here is essential.

Look for oily residue at the power steering pump, rack and hoses. Check the fluid reservoir level — low fluid is a warning. When turning the wheel at low speed (especially on a cold engine), listen for whining or groaning — that is either a pump under pressure or air in the system from a slow leak. Steering that feels heavy, inconsistent or pulls to one side despite a straight road also warrants investigation. Electric power steering (no fluid) can still have faults — feel for inconsistent weight across the steering range during the test drive.

Listen for loud rumbling, hissing or a tinny rattle on cold start — exhaust leaks are loudest before the metal expands with heat. Check for soot marks at manifold joints, flexi-pipe connections and welds. A smell of exhaust inside the cabin is a carbon monoxide risk and a serious safety concern. Rattling heat shields are minor but annoying. A cracked exhaust manifold or split downpipe is a real repair cost — budget $500–$1,500 depending on the vehicle.

The best method is to park the car overnight on clean concrete and check for drips in the morning. During inspection, look under the engine, transmission, diff and rear axle for oily residue. Common leak points include the valve cover gasket (top of engine), oil pan gasket (underneath), front and rear main seals, and the turbo oil feed and return lines on turbocharged engines. Wet, dusty oily residue is a slow leak — fresh drips are an active leak. Either needs to be factored into the price.

The clutch pedal should engage mid-travel — not at the very top or the very bottom of pedal travel. A clutch that grabs high up (near the top of the pedal stroke) is worn and close to needing replacement. Slipping means the revs rise under acceleration but the car doesn't respond — the clutch disc is glazed or worn out. Judder on take-off in first gear is a warped or contaminated clutch disc. A new clutch on a typical Sydney car costs $800–$1,800 including labour — factor that into any negotiation if the clutch shows wear.

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) should be bright red or pinkish-red when new and may darken to a deeper red or light brown with use — still clear, still acceptable. Dark brown or black ATF with a burnt smell is overdue and indicates potential damage. Cloudy, gritty or milky ATF is a serious warning of water contamination or internal wear. For manual gearboxes, the oil is usually amber to brown and thick with a strong gear-oil smell — milky means water contamination. To check ATF: with the engine warm and idling, pull the dipstick (if fitted), wipe on a white tissue and check the colour.

Flood-damaged cars are a real risk in NSW and Queensland. Key signs: mud or silt in wheel arches, under trays and in the boot spare wheel well; water lines or staining on door sills and lower panels; musty or mouldy smell especially under carpets; silt or grit in the cabin air filter, footwells or under seats; fogging or water marks inside the instrument cluster, headlights or tail lights; corrosion on fuse boxes, wiring connectors and under-dash wiring; and multiple simultaneous electrical faults — windows, locks, ABS, airbags. Always run a PPSR check at psr.gov.au. If you suspect flood damage, walk away.

Listen for: engine knocking or tapping under load; transmission clunks or harsh shifts; suspension clunks and squeaks over bumps; brake squeal or grinding; power steering whine; exhaust rattles; wind or tyre noise suggesting seal or alignment issues. Feel for: pulling left or right under braking or on a straight road; vibration in the steering wheel at speed; vibration through the seat or floor; a soft or spongy brake pedal; clutch judder or slipping; harsh or delayed gear changes. Try city streets, a hill and highway speed if possible.

Not necessarily. A well-documented independent service history by a reputable local mechanic is often better than spotty or incomplete dealer history. What matters most is consistency, correct fluids and parts, correct intervals, and clear records for major items like timing belts, clutches and transmission services. A car serviced at the same trustworthy workshop every year is a better buy than one with patchy dealer history where major intervals have been skipped. Always check that the service dates, odometer readings and job records make sense — gaps, backwards odometer readings or missing major services are serious red flags.

High-km cars (over 120,000 km) with no service history at all are high risk and usually best avoided for a daily driver. Without proof of timing belt, clutch, transmission service and oil changes, you are inheriting unknown risk. That said, if the price is significantly below market, you have had a thorough independent inspection (including compression and leak-down testing), and you are prepared to immediately do all major services, it can work — but only with expert help. If the seller is vague, defensive or dismissive about history, that is a strong signal to walk away regardless of the price.

Red flags for forged logbooks: stamps or logos look blurry, pixelated or inconsistent with the dealer's or mechanic's known branding; handwriting or fonts are inconsistent across pages; dates or odometer readings don't follow a logical progression; no mechanic details — business name, ABN, address, phone; or services recorded at impossible intervals. To verify: call the mechanic or dealer listed and confirm the service. Cross-check odometer readings against registration certificates or PPSR history. If you have any doubt, treat the logbook as missing entirely.

The most common scams: deposit scams where the seller asks for a bank transfer or PayID to 'hold' the car before any inspection; fake photos using stolen images from other listings; too-good-to-be-true pricing well below market value; overseas seller scams ('I'm overseas, we'll ship it via eBay'); and curbstoners — unlicensed dealers posing as private sellers flipping written-off or flood-damaged cars. The rule is simple: never pay anything before inspecting the car in person, verifying the VIN, and running a PPSR check. No exceptions.

Never. This is a classic scam pattern. Once you pay a deposit, the seller may ghost you, claim it went to another buyer, or the car turns out to be completely different from the listing. You have almost no legal recourse in a private sale transfer. The correct order is: inspect first, negotiate second, pay only when you are ready to sign a proper sale contract and take possession. Any seller who pressures you to pay a deposit before you have seen the car in person is either running a scam or hiding something about the car.

A curbstoner is an unlicensed dealer posing as a private seller to avoid consumer law obligations. Signs include: multiple cars listed at the same time or repeatedly over time with similar descriptions; unwillingness to provide a home address — only neutral carpark meets; cars that were recently registered or have only been owned for a few weeks; vague service history or ownership stories; pressure for quick sale, cash only or deposit before inspection; and vehicles that later turn out to have written-off, flood or odometer histories. Search the seller's phone number across Marketplace and Gumtree. Check how long they have owned the car via Service NSW registration history.

These phrases are sometimes genuine — an executor liquidating an estate, a family needing a quick sale — but they are also extremely common pressure tactics used by scammers and curbstoners. Be cautious if the seller discourages a pre-purchase inspection, asks for a deposit before you have seen the car, cannot provide clear ownership documents, or is vague about why they are selling. A legitimate urgent sale can happen, but the urgency of the seller is never a reason to skip the inspection, skip the PPSR check, or hand over money before you have full confidence in what you are buying.

The classic bounce test: push down firmly on each corner of the car, then release. The car should settle in one or two bounces. If it bounces more than that, the shocks are worn. Also look for oil leaks down the shock absorber body — a wet or oily shock is already past its useful life. On the test drive, worn shocks feel floaty at speed, cause excessive nose-dive under braking, and allow the rear to squat heavily under acceleration. Suspension that bounces excessively over speed humps is a clear sign. Each shock absorber costs $150–$400 to supply and fit, depending on the car.

Even wear across the full tread width is what you want — it means the alignment, inflation and suspension are all correct. Inner or outer edge wear means the alignment or camber is out. Wear only in the centre means the tyres have been consistently over-inflated. Wear on both shoulders means consistent under-inflation. Cupped or scalloped wear (high and low spots around the tyre) means the shock absorbers or suspension bushings are worn. Also check the tyre age code: the last four digits stamped on the sidewall (week and year of manufacture). Tyres over 6–7 years old should be replaced regardless of tread depth.

A clicking noise when turning sharply — especially in a tight circle — is the classic sign of a worn outer CV joint. The noise tends to get louder as the joint wears. A clunking noise under acceleration (especially from a standstill) points to worn inner CV joints or a driveshaft. Inspect the CV boots: torn or cracked rubber boots allow grease to escape and dirt to enter — once a boot is torn, the joint is on borrowed time. If you see grease splattered around the inner wheel arch or driveshaft area, the boot has been split for some time. A CV joint replacement costs $200–$500 per side depending on make and model.

Crouch down and look inside each wheel arch — especially the rear ones, which trap water and mud. Surface rust on bolts and minor surface scale is normal on older cars, but flaking, pitting or bubbling metal is structural rust that needs attention. On the underbody, check the chassis rails, floor pans, sill seams and spare wheel well (remove the boot carpet). Rust that has eaten through the metal in structural areas is a serious safety issue. Colour differences between panels (especially visible in natural light or from an angle) suggest the car has had panel work done after a crash or significant damage. Look for: overspray on rubber window seals, trim pieces or plastic brackets; texture differences (orange peel) between panels that don't match factory finish; tape or masking lines around panel edges; and fresh paint smell in a supposedly older car. A car that has been repainted after a crash raises questions about what structural work was done underneath. The paint thickness gauge in our Premium 280+ inspection is the most reliable way to detect this.

Smell the car first — a musty or mildew smell, especially when the air conditioning is on, is a strong indicator of water ingress. Pull back the carpet in the front footwells and boot: wet or damp carpet, water staining or rust under the carpet all indicate a leak. Check the headlining for water marks or sag. On sunroof-equipped cars, check that the drain channels are clear — blocked sunroof drains are the most common cause of interior water ingress. Look for fogging or condensation inside the headlight and tail light clusters — that also indicates moisture in sealed areas.

Operate every window up and down — both from the driver's master switch and from each individual door switch. Slow or jerky window movement points to motor or regulator wear. Test central locking from the driver's button, the key fob, and the passenger door. Try child safety locks on rear doors. Test the infotainment: radio, Bluetooth pairing, USB, navigation screen touch response. Check every wiper speed and both front and rear washer jets. Press every button on the dashboard and steering wheel. Start the car and watch the dashboard warning lights — they should all come on briefly and then go off. Any persistent warning light needs to be explained before you buy.

All warning lights should illuminate briefly on start-up (self-test) and then turn off. A persistent engine warning (check engine) light means a stored fault code — could be minor (sensor) or major (engine or emissions fault). ABS light: the anti-lock braking system is not working — a safety issue. Airbag / SRS light: the airbag system has a fault — the bags may not deploy in a crash. Transmission warning: gearbox fault — potentially expensive. 4WD warning: transfer case or diff fault. Any light that stays on or comes on during the test drive needs to be scanned with a diagnostic tool before purchase.

The first 30 seconds of a cold engine startup is the single most diagnostic moment of any pre-purchase inspection. On a cold start you can see: smoke colour (blue, white or black); hear unusual noises that disappear once the engine warms (timing chain rattle, rod knock, valve tick); observe how quickly oil pressure builds; and watch for rough idle, misfires or hesitation that clear once the engine warms. A seller who warms the car up before you arrive has effectively destroyed this data. Our mechanics always insist the car is cold — not started that morning — before we begin any inspection.

Many modern engines are interference engines — if the timing belt snaps, the pistons collide with the open valves, causing catastrophic and usually uneconomical engine damage. Timing belts typically need replacing every 80,000–120,000 km or 5–8 years, depending on the make and model. Always check the service history for documented timing belt replacement with date and odometer. If there is no record and the car is near or over the interval, budget $600–$1,500 for belt, water pump and labour at a reputable Sydney workshop — or negotiate that amount off the price. On an interference engine with no timing belt proof and high kilometres, walking away is often the right call.

When you start the car, the ABS and traction control warning lights should come on briefly (self-test) and then go off. A light that stays on means there is a fault in the system — the ABS or traction control is not functioning, which is both a safety issue and a negotiating point. During the test drive on a safe surface, a gentle firm brake at low speed should produce a slight pulsation through the pedal — that confirms the ABS is engaging. Any car with persistent ABS, stability control or traction warning lights needs a diagnostic scan before purchase.

Check the battery date code — usually a sticker or embossed code showing the week and year of manufacture. A battery over four to five years old is at high risk of failure in Sydney's climate. Look for corrosion (white or green powder) on the terminals, a cracked case, or loose terminal clamps. Measure the voltage: a healthy battery should read around 12.6V with the engine off and 13.8–14.4V with the engine running (showing the alternator is charging). Through most alloy wheels you can see the brake caliper and the disc rotor. Look at the inner pad — if the pad material looks very thin (under 3 mm), replacement is due soon. The disc should look relatively smooth — deep grooves, heavy rust on the face, or cracks are all concerns. Uneven wear between left and right suggests a sticking caliper. Listen during the test drive: squealing on light braking is worn indicator tabs; grinding means the pad is completely gone. Brake pad and disc replacement costs $300–$600 per axle at most Sydney workshops.

No — this is one of the most well-known car scams operating in Australia right now. The seller claims to be overseas, wants to arrange shipping via eBay Motors or a courier, and asks for payment via wire transfer, Western Union, crypto or PayPal Friends and Family. The car either does not exist or is not what was advertised. For all Australian used car purchases: buy locally, inspect the car in person, verify the VIN, run the PPSR check (psr.gov.au), and transfer money only at or after the time of physical handover. There is no legitimate reason for an Australian-registered private car to be sold by an overseas seller.

PPSR stands for Personal Property Securities Register — it is the Australian government database that shows whether a car has any money owing (finance encumbrances), has been reported written-off, has a stolen flag, or has an odometer discrepancy recorded. A PPSR check costs $2 and takes two minutes at psr.gov.au. It is the single cheapest and most important check a buyer can do before committing to a purchase. Always run the PPSR before handing over any money. We walk every client through interpreting the results as part of our inspection service — a clean PPSR is important but not the whole picture.

Private car sales in NSW are sold 'as is' — once money changes hands, the buyer has very limited legal recourse for undisclosed mechanical faults. If you buy a car without an independent inspection and it has a failed head gasket, worn transmission, undisclosed crash damage or a stretched timing chain, you own the repair bill. The average unexpected major repair cost on a used car in Sydney is between $2,000 and $8,000. A workshop inspection has one critical flaw: the seller has to drive the car there. By the time it arrives, the engine is warm and the cold-start data — the most important diagnostic moment of any inspection — is gone. Cooling system faults, oil pressure irregularities, starter motor weakness and morning smoke that clear up after warm-up are all invisible.
