Be cautious if the seller discourages a pre-purchase inspection, asks for a deposit before you have seen the car, cannot provide clear ownership documents, or is vague about why they are selling. A legitimate urgent sale can happen, but the urgency of the seller is never a reason to skip the inspection, skip the PPSR check, or hand over money before you have full confidence in what you are buying.
The classic bounce test: push down firmly on each corner of the car, then release. The car should settle in one or two bounces. If it bounces more than that, the shocks are worn. Also look for oil leaks down the shock absorber body — a wet or oily shock is already past its useful life. On the test drive, worn shocks feel floaty at speed, cause excessive nose-dive under braking, and allow the rear to squat heavily under acceleration. Smell the car first — a musty or mildew smell, especially when the air conditioning is on, is a strong indicator of water ingress. Pull back the carpet in the front footwells and boot: wet or damp carpet, water staining or rust under the carpet all indicate a leak. Check the headlining for water marks or sag. On sunroof-equipped cars, check that the drain channels are clear — blocked sunroof drains are the most common cause of interior water ingress. Look for fogging or condensation inside the headlight and tail light clusters — that also indicates moisture in sealed areas.
Operate every window up and down — both from the driver's master switch and from each individual door switch. Slow or jerky window movement points to motor or regulator wear.
